An Open-Source Game Framework for Collaborative Storytelling

The AnswerVerse is a shared fictional universe and open-source game framework for developing narrative-driven games about college life and social issues. Originally developed by students and faculty at the University of Miami's NERDLab, the project brings together reusable code, characters, and artwork to support interconnected stories within the same world.

The framework allows contributors to develop new episodes with branching conversations, interactive choices, and mini-games without starting from scratch. By building on an existing world, developers can explore new characters, perspectives, and themes while contributing to a larger body of creative work.

Project Significance

AnswerVerse explores whether a shared game world can support ongoing creative production within an academic setting. Students and faculty can contribute characters, artwork, and stories that extend beyond a single course or development cycle. Outside developers can use the framework to create their own experiences, while NERDLab maintains editorial oversight of official AnswerVerse releases.

Different iterations of AnswerVerse have received recognition at the BEA Festival of Media Arts, Serious Play Awards, and Serious Games Showcase and Challenge, reflecting the range of projects developed within the shared framework.

The project also provides opportunities for collaboration with researchers and subject matter experts. Rather than commissioning an entirely new game for each research question, collaborators can work within an existing narrative world, developing stories and interventions that build on its characters and systems.

The larger ambition is to create a sustainable home for socially engaged games that can support creative expression, educational experiences, and research without requiring every episode to serve the same purpose.
